During pregnancy, you might notice mild swelling throughout your body and especially in your feet and ankles. This swelling in the feet is known as edema. Edema affects most women during pregnancy and it usually occurs around the fifth month and can increase in the third trimester.
Why does it occur during pregnancy?
Edema can occur in persons who are not pregnant but it occurs a lot more in pregnant women. During pregnancy, the body produces more fluids and blood to meet the needs of the developing baby. This can lead to swelling in parts of the body, however, due to gravity, the feet and ankles are likely to swell more. Slight swelling is normal and expected during pregnancy and most women would get to experience it.
What if I notice more than slight swelling?
Excessive swelling and a swelling that comes up suddenly may be a sign of a serious problem and you should therefore see your doctor right away if it happens. If you notice swelling in your face, more than a slight swelling in your hands, uneven swelling in your feet and pain or tenderness in your thigh, you should also see your doctor.
