Some police officers numbering about 500, who retired earlier in the year have accused the Lagos State Police Command of refusing to pay the backlog of their one-year salary arrears because they claim that the command has kept their money in a fixed deposit account, while their colleagues in other states have been paid.
One of the officers, Mr. Ahmed Jamiu, said, “All of us who were promoted to our next rank ranging from ASP, DSP, and SP are still begging the state to settle us. All our mates in other states have been paid, but what we get from the office of the OC, MSS at Ikeja was ‘come today, come tomorrow.’ We carried out own discreet investigation and we discovered that the money had been fixed (in an account).”
“We want to appeal to Nigerians to help us beg the Lagos State Police Command not to allow us to die in hunger before settling us. Corruption is what is delaying our payment. But while they want to benefit from our sweat, they should also remember that one day, they would leave the service.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, promised to get back to Punch correspondents on Saturday, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
